Forgotten Landings
A lot is known about the history of urbanized areas in Allegan County, like Saugatuck and Douglas, but what about places where there isn’t even a post office or a church? At November’s meeting, Chris Clark will talk about one such spot, Mack’s Landing, which played an important role in river commerce and fruit growing. Come and learn about the gravel pit, the one-room school, the archaeological dig, the resort catering to African-Americans, the DNR boat launch, the Sunshine Society, and the Purdy family.
Chris Clark lives in Saugatuck Township and is an active SDHC volunteer. He retired from the University of Notre Dame in 2019.
