Its Own Distinctive Delight: The Art of Advertising in the Golden Age of Great Lakes Passenger Steamships
Join us for a free public program where Eric Harmsen explores the history and development of printed advertising materials for the Great Lakes passenger steamships from the late 1800s through the early 1960s. Despite originally being intended to be disposable, many of these early advertisements are great works of art in their own right and reflect the style of their time as well as changing themes in advertising. The advertisements featured in the presentation are all from the Michigan Maritime Museum’s collection and are now on display in the South Haven museum’s newest exhibition.
Eric Harmsen serves as Administration and Curatorial Specialist at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven.
