About the Event
Vintage Views of Michigan Tourist Attractions with M. Christine Byron and Thomas R. Wilson, independent historians. Outdoors at the History Center in Douglas.
The first lecture of the series sees the return of veteran presenters, M. Christine Byron and Thomas R. Wilson, presenting on Vintage Views of Michigan Tourist Attractions.
Take a trip with Chris and Tom along Michigan’s roads and visit some of the state’s iconic roadside attractions. Some of the places are long gone; others still lure travelers off the road. In an hour you’ll travel the breath of the state and not spend a penny on gas.
If you have traveled on Michigan’s highways and byways, chances are that you’ve stopped at places like Castle Rock, seen Paul Bunyan, and defied gravity at the Mystery Spot. Tourist attractions like these sprang up on the roadside landscape as Michigan expanded its highway system from the 1930s through the 1970s. You will relive memories of visiting natural and man-made wonders – from deer parks to dinosaur gardens; from scenic sand dunes to the world’s largest Indian; from mine-shafts to scenic towers. Stop for pie at the Cherry Hut, cross the Bridge for a pasty and enjoy a Jones ice cream cone in Baldwin. Don’t forget to bring home some souvenir pennants and a pair of moccasins!
This event will be held outdoors at the History Center in Douglas, 130 Center Street, Douglas on Tuesday, July 11th at 11am. The one-hour program begins when the school bell rings at 11 a.m. To assure comfortable outdoor seating, attendees are encouraged to bring their own camp chairs if possible.
A summertime tradition since 1996, SDHC’s weekly Tuesday Talks present entertaining and informative insights into local community life and history throughout July and August.
