In 1848, the second year of the new Dutch "Kolonie" in West Michigan's Ottawa County, a much needed brick manufacturing industry was begun in the rich clay fields between Groningen and Zeeland The company was created by Dutch immigrant Jan Hendrik Veneklasen and his son Berend. The company flourished for more than seventy-five years and contributed to a unique architectural legacy. 103 p., photos, maps

Michael Douma gave a Tuesday til Noon lecture at the SDHS Pumphouse Museum the summer of 2006. The images [below] were used in the presentation and are examples of Veneklasen brick. Michael took many of the pictures and indicated that he has no objection to the SDHS using of them for historical purposes. Michael has written a book on the subject and is working on his Ph.D. in history. The book was done in conjunction with the Zeeland Historical Society -- Jack Sheridan 11/5/06
