The history of Saugatuck and its artists has never before been collected in an organized manner. Over the years there have been a few magazine articles on individual artists:
"John C. Johansen, Painter" by Walter Marshall Clute, The Sketch Book, Vol. V, No. 2, 1905.
"John W. Norton" The Sketch Book, September, 1905.
"Carl Mauch" The Cow Bell, July l, 1913.
"Carl Hoerman: Painter of the Desert" by Peter Merrill, Southern California Quarterly, Fall, 1991.
"Albert Henry Krehbiel, 1873-1945: Early American Impressionist" by Rebecca F. Krehbiel, Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, Spring, 1984.
"Elsa Ulbricht: An Unquenchable Spirit" by Janet Treaty, Wisconsin Academy Review, Summer, 1992.
"Cora Bliss Taylor: Saugatuck's Living Treasure" by Dale Killingbeck, Holland Weekend Magazine, May 26, 1984.
"Bill Olendorf: Making an Impression" by Jackie Stasi in Lake Shore Drive Magazine, Summer, 1994.
and one sketch, a brief overview of the Summer School of Painting at Ox-Bow:
"Summers at Ox-Bow: The Early Days of a Michigan Art Colony" by Peter Merrill, Michigan Historical Review, Spring, 1996.
One more book has an art-sounding title, but it's more about poetry and history:
Saugatuck Art Colony by George Coutoumanos, published at Saugatuck about 1941.
Several artists with Saugatuck associations have had shows, which were accompanied by worthwhile catalogs:
Elsa Ulbricht, 1910-1950 (Charles Allis Art Library, Milwaukee) February 18 - March 16, 1973.
Frederick Frary Fursman: A Rediscovered Impressionist (UWM Art Museum) September 13 - October 20, 1991.
John Warner Norton (Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery) November 3, 1991 - March 28, 1992)
And there has been one, full scale book:
Krehbiel: Life and Works of an American Artist by Robert Guinan (Refinery Gateway: Washington D. C.) 1991.
This book includes 106 illustrations, mostly in full color, of Krehbiel paintings and many of these are of Saugatuck, Ox-Bow and the Saugatuck-Douglas area. The painting pictured on the book jacket appears to be the old pumphouse, now used by the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society as a museum. Copies of this publication will be available at the museum gift shop during the exhibition this summer.
To add to this small body of literature the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society has completed their first publication Painting the Town: A History of Art in Saugatuck and Douglas which will be for sale at the museum beginning about June 1. [1997] Written by committee co-chairman Kit Lane, with lots of help from her committee, other Society members and most of the town, the book was designed by Ken Cans. It is published in soft cover with a full color cover and several pages of color illustrations.
The volume was made possible by contributions from area businesses and individuals, a donation from the Saugatuck-Douglas Art Club and a grant from the Michigan Council of the Humanities. The cost is $15 per copy, add S3 if you want it mailed, and order from: Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society, PO Box 617, Douglas, MI 49406. It would help if you would write the words BOOK ORDER on the envelope.
