As teen Bird apprenticed at the Ensign Drug Store and in his 20s bought the business and ran it for 50 years. Along with R.T. Rogers, Charles E. Bird was a a builder of large steamers between 1885 and 1898. First boat built was the A.B. Taylor, named for a prominent businessman. The shipyard was at a site later owned by R.R. Phelps. Bird also owned a warehouse in Saugatuck and a pier at Pier Cover. He purchased old Heath gristmill site on April 16, 1886. Rogers sold his interest to Calvin Whitney in 1896 and all boats were sold in 1889, due to the bad condition of the Saugatuck harbor. See Person Profile for more details.
