Two typed pages on thin, onionskin paper, to plan for "Old Saugatuck Week," August 3-5. Year is not recorded.
The plan reads as follows:
OLD SAUGATUCK WEEK - August 3, 4, 5
Here is a review of plans for Old Saugatuck Week as of Friday, July 14:
Program for the three days:
Wednesday, August 3: Opening parade at 12 noon; children in oldtime costumes. Route from Village Hall to Village Square (tentative). Committee: Julie Dorn, Jean Brady
August 3, 2 pm. Barrel-horse race. Track: from Casa Loma to Main Street (by hamburger joint). No more than six contestants to a race.
Simmons to see Kasten about barrels. Burns to see Hutchins about sawing heads. Burns and Janis will paint, (should have public address system at finish line; would Ev Thomas do the announcing and ballyhoo?) Six paddles needed. Determine final winner by race of winners. Prizes?
Chairman: John Janis
August 3, 3:30 p.m. Greased Pole. Pole extending, at an angle, out over Kalamazoo Lake. Two methods: time in getting to end of pole, or a prize at end of pole. Burns has plan for pole supports etc. No chairman as of now.
August 3, 5:00 p.m. Hopping contest. Contestants hobbled, to race in Butler street, start at Village Hall and finish at Village Square. Two winners—1st and 2nd. Consolation—two last. (Winners of Wednesday and Thursday to race on Friday for world’s championship). Chairman is Harley Henderson, who will meet with Burns and Janis to set up rules, etc). Need P A system. Two final prizes—cups.
Thursday, August 4: same afternoon events.
Friday, August 5: same afternoon events, with hopping championship.
NIGHTS :
Tuesday, August 2: Saug-a-Talent Time to have oldsters.
[page 2] NIGHTS (cont)
Wednesday, August 3: Regular dancing?
Thursday, August 4: Maybe Farmer Nick would go for a couple of wrestlers appearing with false gray beards, gag for a couple of minutes like two oldsters, then tear beards etc.
Friday, August 5: Old Saugatuck Ball, costumed. Suggested: Oldtime style show to precede Grand March. Grand March led by Pa and Ma Saugatuck (to be choosen by Committee). Prizes for costumes. Chairman- Ray Bayless,
NOTES:
Ed Burns (Douglas) has written, extending an invitation to Governor Williams. It is certain, so it is said, that some top state official will be here in case Williams is not. Whoever it is he may participate in parade, should be taken out for dinner, may take part in Ball. At Ball, his place in grand March will have to be set.
FRIDAY- Stores etc should be decorated, local people should be in oldtime costume. Some sort of emblem should be set up for use in windows, or in front of businesses.
Chairman- Marion Bale
HISTORICAL- Fred Davis is to help anyone wanting historical items for display, working with Marion Bale.
PARADE- Poll Museum will put in one or two of its old cars. Marshall should be named for the parade, route and such talked over with Henry Hungerford. Village Flags should be out all day.
