Idlers Rest, Saugatuck, MI
Postcard
Colored postcard of the Idlers Rest rooming house.
An enclosed note reads: The picture is of the house on the corner of Frances Street and Holland Street. The house behind the Flag Pole was demolished (or moved?)
The barracks-like building in the background was a hotel for lumbermen during the lumber boom and re-building of Chicago after the fire. It then became a tourist hotel due to its being on the hill. and therefore breezier, before air conditioning..
The barricks like building was completely gutted and restored in about 1980 by two local couples. A subsequent divorce caused bankruptcy and the property was taken over by a bank in South Haven.
I bought one of the four condos in 1983 the property then was called Village Hill Manor.
