Tree Houses

An exchange on the SDHC newsletter insert, page 132.
"Raising the Roof: Buildings and Architecture of the Saugatuck and Douglas Area" triggered a memory that I have of a tree house that was used for honeymooners. I believe it was on the road from Douglas toward Douglas Beach (beyond the golf course) and would have been on the south side of the road. As a child it fascinated me. I think there was another tree house on Lake Shore Drive."

Kit Lane's reply"
"This is the first mention I have ever run across about tree houses, especially commodious enough for grown-ups. Does anyone have more information or a picture? The Lane family, at 41 Spring Street, Douglas, had a tree house for kids in a big willow tree between the Quonset hut and the garage off the alley behind the Douglas Bakery. Unfortunately beer trucks making deliveries at the bakery would sometimes bump it (and eventually caused its demise) and so kids in the tree house used to really scramble when they saw a big truck turn into the alley."
