From an 6 Sept 2023 email from Steve Williford: "This year is the 37th year of the Saugatuck production of A Christmas Carol. I had just turned 33 when I was asked to play Scrooge in 1987 - the first year. Next month I'll turn 69. I don't mean to give the impression that I'm turning in my hat and cane quite yet... but we need to come together and work out the foundations that will see our production of A Christmas Carol in Saugatuck survive as a strong entity into the future. This is important so that it can continue to encourage youth (and others) to explore the world of theatre, to bring the joy of the classic story of Scrooge's redemption to our audiences, and to give back to the community with donations to charities to help those with basic needs. We are currently using the Red Barn Theatre, Inc non-profit which was formed (I believe) in 1981 and under a DBA: Saugatuck Village Players (filed in 1991). Our production came into the Saugatuck Village Player's domain in 1999. The non-profit had been formed for a totally different purpose and our fit with this non-profit has never been good. To maximize our potential we need to form a new non-profit that gives us the flexibility for 2023 and beyond. In the last five years, our focus has changed so that we now donate to charities that are feeding and clothing the less fortunate in our community. Let us come together as a group and discuss what we want to achieve with Christmas Carol and to define (and possibly expand) our mission. From this group some leaders will emerge to form a governing board. It would be great to have a new non-profit in place before this year's production. Getting it done shouldn't be hard or take very long but it will take some thought and work. If we don't quite get it in place for this year, we will have it in 2024."
