This photos captures Saugatuck leading educators, mariners, doctor, shipbuilders and business people. Some came to the new town during the logging era, pivoted to benefit from shipping and/or shipbuilding. To serve the town's next economic engine - tourism, the Pride's transformed their furniture store into the Maplewood Hotel and the Phelps converted a mill into the Hotel Butler. Mr. Phelps, Latta, Pride and Mrs. Phelps served as teachers, school board members or adminstrators. Dr. Walker was the town's beloved curmudgeon physician. Delia Pride ran a nursing home with her sister that was replaced by the Douglas Community Hospital.
