Historical marker sought
A campaign is being started to raise money for a historical marker for the Old Allegan Road. The road grew out of an Indian trail which connected Allegan and points east with Lake Michigan. At the request of citizens living along the road, the Saugatuck Township Park and Recreation Commission agreed to offer a site for the marker in River Bluff Park, according to Art Lane of the Park Commission. The marker would cost about $2,025 plus installation. The money would come from donations rather than township park funds. The road must be listed on the State Register of Historic Sites in order to be eligible for a marker.
Persons wishing to donate may make checks payable to the Saugatuck Township Park and Recreation Commission, noting on the check that the money is for the historical marker. Donations are tax deductible. The address is Box 127, Douglas. Ml 49406.
