Rediscovering a Michigan Painter
From "Robert Fort: Rediscovering a Michigan Artist" at the OSH 2020 Robert Harry Fort 1875 – 1954 Untitled (Children Coming From School) c. 1947 | oil on canvas Here we are looking north through the backyards of the houses on Griffith Street in Saugatuck. It is a winter day. In the foreground, a woman is hanging laundry behind the Newnham House, where the artist lived. The house to the right of the Newnham House is now Lucy’s restaurant. On Mason street, to the right, the local children can be seen on their way home from school. To the left, we see the Methodist Church on Mason Street. In the background, the First Congregational Church looms over the scene. Exhibited: Muskegon Artists Annual Exhibition, Hackley Art Gallery, 1947 Collection: Saugatuck-Douglas History Center 2019.33 Gift of John Thomas and Ed Green
