The image is in reverse of the actual scene due to the printing process. This lithograph by Emily Parks depicts the west shore of the Kalamazoo River. This is where chain ferry passengers arrived at the Ferry Store across the river. The Saugatuck waterfront and hotels appear in the background of the work. Since Parks works from a reference of drawing in plein aire, she did not reverse the drawing on the printing stone, thus the orientation of the buildings is reversed.
