Stereoscope Cards, unbranded
Photograph
Four stereoscopic twin-photos mounted on orange cards. The back of the cards are pink and blank except for handwritten titles written with an ink pen
1 "School House Saugatuck Mich" - Very tiny students lined up outside a grand Union School building in Saugatuck. A plank boardwalk leads across an open field to the school. An attached post-it note in James Schmiechen's handwriting reads "Saug. School, ca 1867 (the year it was built) Looks to be still under construction (note foundation is scaffolded).
2 "Mouth of the Kalamazoo River, old and new light-houses in the distance" - The lower left side of the image shows the details of the old channel walls. A few Fishtown shacks can be seen in front of the old lighthouse.
3 "Johnson's Mill Saugatuck, Mich" - A horse-drawn wagon with standing teamster is parked in front of the mill. The dark-clothed workers are lined up on the porch for the photos. The mill has a tall chimney and water barrels (an early fire suppression system) on the ridge of the simple roof.
4 No title on back - View of Saugatuck from Mt. Baldhead. An attached post-it note specuates that "Heath flour mill does not appear - pre 1874? Fire house (1880) appears but is this Morrison Hall? This card is .5 inch shorter than the others.
