SDHS Hardcover Books

2023.06.03

From the SDHC produced books to accompany museum exhibits, a limited number, typically 25, 50 or 100, of softbound copies were sent away to be bound in hard covers by hand, typically at the Lincoln Bindery in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. These hardcover books were sold at a premium ($100) to fund the next book's production. Each book was hand numbered and were often reserved by SDHC members who wanted a particular numbered copy for their collection. The sales of these books fueled excitement at the exhibit opening parties. These hardcover editions were the brainchild of Ken Carls who was head designer of SDHC publications from approximately 1994 to 2008. Mr. Carls worked closely with James Schmiechen who authored many of the publications.
